A Life Surrounded by Art

Growing up in a world of art, Phillip Payne created his first fine art piece at just fifteen. Raised in Arizona—first in Sedona, then on the Navajo Nation—his creative education began long before formal schooling, guided instead by hands-on experience and the artistic legacy of his father, renowned bronze sculptor Ken Payne.

Phillip learned to sculpt in clay before he could walk. By fourteen, he completed a piece strong enough to be displayed—and sold—in his father’s gallery. A year later, he bought his first car with the proceeds. At nineteen, he opened his first gallery.

Behind the Artist

Growing up in a world of art, Phillip created his first fine art piece at the age of 15. Phillip is the visionary behind Anticus with the original concept of using art, books, and all of our shared passions to create a community.

“One of my favorite things is helping people collect their first piece whether it’s through our layaway program or a custom plan.”

Sculpting From the Written Word

“Everything that I’ve chosen for subject matter has been based off things I have read.”

Phillip’s work is deeply rooted in literature, history, and philosophy. Whether inspired by Beethoven, Geronimo, or a passage read late at night, each sculpture begins as an image formed in the mind—not a replication of something seen, but an interpretation shaped by imagination.

This literary foundation gives his work a narrative quality—each piece telling a story that feels both timeless and personal.

Collectors at the Heart

Phillip’s favorite part of being an artist is the collectors themselves. He values the time spent in conversation—helping people discover their first piece, guiding them through custom commissions, or simply sharing stories in the gallery.
